Retinoid Tips

Retinoids are so important for the skin but can be tough to tolerate at first.  Here are some tips:

1.       Start low.  Consider an OTC strength first or start with a lower medical grade/ prescription strength like Skinbetter AlphaRet or a low strength tretinoin.

2.       Start slow.  Use once and wait 3 days.  Watch for any signs of peeling or irritation (redness).  When this resolves, resume use first at twice weekly then slowly increasing to nightly.

3.       Use only a pea sized amount.  More is not better!

4.       Only use at nighttime.  Retinoids should never be used in the daytime.

5.       Try applying your moisturizer first then your retinoid.

6.       If still irritated, then use a half pea-sized amount on the back of your hand, mix with a pea sized amount of your moisturizer to dilute then apply to your face.

7.       The goal is to use your retinoid nightly and to gradually increase the strength; however, not all skin can tolerate retinoids.  If this is you, please know there are other anti-aging active ingredients we can utilize!
