How to choose a retinoid

Retinoids are the class of molecules belonging to the Vitamin A family. They can be formulated for both topical (i.e. tretinoin) and oral use (i.e. isotretinoin/Accutane).

OTC strengths are known as retinols.  They are more mild and less irritating on the skin.  Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair is a good example that is very well tolerated.

Medical grade retinoids are the next step up.  We love SkinBetter Sciences AlphaRet in this category.  Not only does this product provide your retinoid but also your AHA/BHAs making it great for those looking for a one-step application.

Prescription strength retinoids come in many flavors:  adapalene, tretinoin, and tazarotene just to name a few.  Adapalene is ideal for acne whereas as tretinoin has long been used for anti-aging.  We feel tazarotene is one of the strongest retinoids available, and often the most irritating.  That being said, it is a favorite amongst dermatologists for its potency!

We recommend to start at a lower strength just a few times a week and gradually increase to nightly.  Once you are tolerating 5-7 nights a week, it’s time to bump up to the next strength!  (See even more tips here.) Consistency is key with these medications.  They are like a fine wine—the results just get better with time!
